Our Spring Bulb Top Tips!
Spring Flowering Bulbs
Alongside well-known favourites like daffodils (Narcissus) and tulips (Tulipa), there are plenty of other spring bulbs worth trying. I like planting Crocus, Hyacinth, snowdrops (Galanthus), Cyclamen, fritillaria, Iris, Muscari, and Scilla, as each one adds its own colour and character to the garden.
Top tip before buying:
When choosing bulbs, pick ones that feel firm and are a good size—similar to how you’d choose onions. Avoid any that feel soft. Also, you can reuse old compost for planting new bulbs, which helps save money and gives them extra nutrients.
Planting:
For a spring display, bulbs are usually planted in September. However, Hyacinths and Tulips are best planted a bit later, around October or November. Planting them at the right depth is important for healthy growth and to ensure they come back each year, so always follow the recommended guidelines.
Many tulips are often treated as annuals, but some varieties will come back year after year. When planning your display, think about flowering times—snowdrops appear early, tulips later, and both daffodils and tulips have early, mid, and late types. Choosing a mix will help your garden stay colourful for longer.
Top tip:
Squirrels can dig up bulbs, so placing chicken wire over the soil can help protect them.
