In the specialist vegetable nursery at Fentongollan, millions of vegetable plants are raised
each year and supplied to farmers who grow them on to supply supermarkets and the
grocery trade. You have probably already eaten some!
These plants are specially raised so they will grow away rapidly as soon as they are
planted, even in the harsh conditions of a field on a Cornish cliff top.
The plants are grown using the most vigorous hybrid seed, in special cells which are
designed to make all the roots point the right way so that they anchor the plant and find
moisture quickly. They are then hardened off before dispatch. When these professional
grade plants are raised in a garden or pot they grow away easily and absolutely thrive.
The vegetable plants are delivered sealed in bags made with millions of microscopic
holes. This modifies the atmosphere in the bag which allows the plant to respire very
slowly. (The technology operates by tailoring the gas permeability of the bag to match
the respiration rate of the plant, so that a desirable equilibrium modified atmosphere is
created naturally within a few hours, without the need for gas flushing. The equilibrium
is achieved when the rate of oxygen and carbon dioxide transmission through the film
equals the product’s respiration rate.)
This means that when the plants arrive if you are not able to plant them out straight away they will still be in perfect condition for over two weeks inside their pack if it is left upright in good light and unopened.
